OT Canyoning in Patagonia

Daniel Clearwater Nov 09, 2010 02:04 PM

Hi everyone,

Having just arrived in Chile and heading to Patagonia very soon, Im pretty keen to get a bit of canyoning in during the visit.

I was planning to just join a guided canyoning trip (As all my gear is still back home in New Zealand), however I wonder if anyone in the group has any information or contacts that could help me?

In particular, Id like to hear if anyone has any reccomendations for Canyons or Areas for Canyoning in Chile. Also, if anyone has any Argentine or Chilean contacts they could put me in touch with to ask the same questions or even join up for a trip.

Much appreciated,

Chucky

I hope your trip is going well! We got our first snowstorm yesterday! I have a season pass at a few of the ski resorts and am excited to use it. Long distance with Alicia continues to be hard. I miss her lots & I am happy in Boulder, without much desire to move to southern california even though I've been exploring all my options to get a job there. Our lethargic economy has proved more than challenging. We see each other every few weeks, but it's not often enough. However, that's nothing compared to you and Pip right now. Not sure how you're taking it all, but at least you've got lots of distractions on a daily/weekly basis.

Don't worry about responding, I know how travel emailing goes. I hope someone has some canyon connections for you down there.

Happy travels, may everything go your way.
best,
Ira

Hey Ira,

I thought that you were moving down to be with her??  Bummer.. I guess that long distance after close distance would be much harder than the other way around. Everyfew weeks was what Pip and I dealt with for 6 months and I agree, its not enough.

Right now, its been 7 and a bit weeks, but I get to see her again on 29 Nov, so thats not too far away.. Then a 5 weeks together, then 7 more apart... Nuts..  But after all of that, well be buying a house together in Palmerston North, so theres light at the end of the tunnel..

Im currently pretty bored in Chile right now. have spent nearly 4 days doing nothing. Partly my fault, but partly cause Steph has decided that sitting in a Hammock and reading a book is the best way to spend holiday time in South America... Grrrr..

But tommorrow, im going to be in Santiago and were meeting new friends who are super organised, keen and ready to do a bunch of stuff..

I have looked through several of your videos that I didnt know where there... you should put a link on your FB when they come out! So many people and adventures to keep track of!

Hey, I was wondering about a favour. Have you got Mike Dallins Ouray Book?  I hear that thers a picture of me somewhere in there?  Id love to get my hands on a copy. Not keen on using Tom or Richs stores if i can help, I always seem to get smashed with postage.. Any chance of a helping hand somehow??

My own book is nearly ready to publish.  Not.

I think that perhaps next winter I might sit down and seriously think about writing something, but for now, its well on the back burner. Might get in a handful of new routes in this summer, but sadly its back to reality and a job.. (learning how to be a pilot instructor, so its hardly going to be boring)..

Do you know that Dan guy who emailed me from PNW?

Keep it real,

Dan

Whoa, you signed it Dan, not Chucky. I think that's a first.

I confirmed with Mike Dallin that he was planning to get you and Joe a copy as thanks. I'll get on him about it and happily pay the postage myself. If I send it to your Christchurch address, would that be best or send it to Pip? Or wait until your back in Palmy?

Yeah, Alicia and I thought it would be easy-peasy as you've phrased it for me to move to beige desert of Palmdale and find work. Little did we know that defense spending (predominant industry there) has been cut lately without much forecast next year based on our country's budget. In fact, there's a big deficit reduction bill aiming for a solid December 1 final draft. I'll be extremely curious how that goes. I'm hoping Alicia's program remains intact on one hand, if it doesn't we get her back to Colorado and sort out the details. The biggest disappointment is that some of these economic factors have thwarted my ideas that I could be a ruthless saver and pull off another big adventure in a shorter timeframe. As it stands Alicia and I are each supporting separate residences. No savings there.

Congrats on the house purchase plans with Pip. She is going to be the new Ms. Chucky! Awesome. As long as we survive whatever is ahead of us, I think it'sbecomingclear that Alicia might well be that good fit for me as well. I'm anxious to start living that life though. It's frustrating that economic conditions have caused a holding pattern in life events.

Sorry you're bored. Glad you enjoyed the videos. I've been as pre-occupied as you with life to spend more time with it. I have a website planned, and potentially a released DVD of videos.... but I'm still finding my format and seeing more adventure outdoor films I'm recognizing I want more of a story or emotional hook to the video than just a long mountain dew commercial set to music. Our helicopter day out of Makarora still stands as my best video along those lines.

What was Dan's last name or email? I haven't seen the post yet as i only getthedigest. I don't know anyone specific... a dude who's email is coonrad sounds potentially familiar. I've heard he's recommendable.

Keep enjoying your step away form reality. I'm in reality. It's not nearly as much fun as one might think.... however I am still appreciative of having my own personal shower/kitchen/bed every night I want it. One of the things I learned to appreciate about borrowing everyone else's for a year!

Wish I could be there with you. Until next time...

happy travels. Alicia and I both want to come visit you & Pip (north island this time would be great or canyons together on the south) some future summer.

I can't wait to hear the highlights. Welcome almost-home.

Mike divorced Dianne after a trip to hike Kilimanjaro in October. I've been climbing with him at the indoor gym and finally had him bring a copy of the book (signed) and I'll ship it out today. Sorry it's not waiting for you when you return, but I figure you'll get it sooner or later.

Best wishes for a good conclusion to your trip!

          Hey Ira,

I thought that you were moving down to be with her?? Bummer.. I guess that long distance afterclose distance wouldbe much harder than the other way around. Everyfew weeks was whatPip and I dealt with for6 months andI agree, its not enough.

Partly my fault, but partly causeSteph has decided that sitting in a Hammock and reading a book is the best way to spend holiday time in South America... Grrrr..

But tommorrow, im going to be in Santiago and were meeting new friendswho are super organised, keen and ready to do a bunch of stuff..

I have looked through several of your videos that I didnt know where there...you should put a link on your FB when they come out! So many people and adventures tokeep track of!

Hey, I was wondering about a favour.Have you got Mike DallinsOuray Book? I hear that thers a picture of me somewhere in there? Id love to get my hands on a copy. Not keen on using Tom or Richs stores if i can help, I always seem to get smashed with postage.. Any chance ofa helping hand somehow??

My own book is nearly ready to publish.Not.

I think that perhaps next winter I might sit down and seriously think about writing something, but for now, its well on the back burner. Might get in a handful of new routes in this summer, but sadly its back to reality and a job.. (learning how to be a pilot instructor, soits hardly going to be boring)..

Do you know that Dan guy who emailed me from PNW?

          Keep it real,

          Dan

Happy travels, may everything go your way.
          best,

          Chucky

            Hey Mate,

The low-down is that Dianne is controlling. Mike is easy going. Mike finally had the last straw on some part of the Africa trip... not sure exactly what that is/was, but it has Mike climbing at the gym with me rather than with Dianne and the divorce papers are pending.

On Friday, Alicia got a job offer from DigitalGlobe, the company I'm working for. We're awaiting official HR paperwork, but it looks like she's moving back. Just in time too. I think long distance was going to take its toll. (however, I'm still going to my interview in Los Angeles next Friday). Check this place out:http://www.esquire.com/blogs/chris-jones/danny-hillis-inventor-1210
I'll be interviewing for a Project Manager position.

However, the place I want to live is here and with Alicia looking like she has a strong path back, and soon, I don't see leaving. In fact, I'll probably look at buying a townhouse or condo again.

Bummer about being back at work.... Speaking from experience as the traveler when all my mates were working, I'm sure you won't get a lot of sympathy, but I totally understand. Good luck getting back in the groove. Did you propose to Pip yet? Are you ready not just to be back at work, but bat in Palmerston North on the North Island? That's probably just as big a change as traveling to working.

Alicia and I booked our tickets to Nepal in April for the canyon rendezvous. We're thrilled to finally have international canyon travel back on the calendar.

I'm almost done with a first descent draft of a video - I'll send you a link to the draft. Check out www.youtube.com/frontrangeproduction for a cool dog sledding video from Alicia's and my christmas trip to Steamboat (~3hrs from Denver).

cheers mate, glad you have you back on email. When will the photos/video be processed?

            Ira
