Re: [PNWCanyoning] Canyoning plan 2007

Ira,

Great to hear from you, and glad to hear you're keen for some first descents this season.

I don't remember, did you get a chance to do any of the canyons here last season ?

We have a lot of potentially good new canyons to take a look at this season, and I'm always

keen to do the established ones at least once a season.

The places I'm thinking about for the 2007 season are the Pacific Northwest (of course), Jasper, Hawaii, and France.

I think a slide show night might be a good idea, I'll post on the Northwest group and ask when is a good time for everyone.

Let me know if any of the other locations appeal to you and how much time you have available for this silly activity we enjoy so much.

Rob

Rob,

I've been meaning to write you for a while now, but a change in jobs and some traveling this January put emailing in general as a low priority.  Long story short, I'm back in the working grind and have been thinking a lot about canyons for this coming summer.  I would still like to meet up with you and many of the folks also into the sport in this area.  I'm also enthusiastically game for some first descents.

We might be too early for canyoneering, but with this warm spell we might be prime for scouting (and to scare ourselves with the higher water levels).  It would also be a good way to meet new people / each other.

Hope your holidays and winter season have been good to you,
Ira

2007 looks to be a great season of canyoning in the Northwest.
With the rugged weather of this winter, there could be many canyons

in need of anchor upgrades this season.
Lots of new folks interested in exploring first descents around here
this season.
It seems that my usual canyoning partner, Joe has gotten himself a
job, and wont be able to make it to the Northwest for the 2007

season. Great news for Joe, but not great news for the Pacific
Northwest canyoning scene.
Joe's energy and motivation were key in the development of many of
the new routes, the last two seasons.
There are still many excellent looking canyons on the A list to be

descended.
I hope to add a few of these to the completed canyon list this
season.
Would also like to video more canyons here, in Canada, Hawaii, and
France.

Anyone interested in these trips, or other ideas, let me know.
Whats your thoughts for the 2007 season ?

Rob,

Last season I took some friends who were new to canyons down Silver Creek, then did Denny, and Ken Liebert and I did Edith during the first snowstorm in Ranier at the end of October -- great little canyon, but I'm sure it's better when the rope doesn't freeze to the descender if you pause momentarily on rappel.

I still view last summer as my recovery and getting settled from my move to the PNW.  This summer I want to put a much larger focus on climbing and canyons.  So if you're game for anchor replacement on repeats of the known good ones, I'm in.  And I'd be excited for sure to do some more first descents.  Climbing rocks and mountains will also compete for my time this summer, but I could see having time for 2-3 canyons a month.  I'd very much like to expand my experience here -- maybe not quite the 6 canyons/month I was doing in southern california at one point -- but more than 3 for the season!

As for travel, Jasper, Hawaii, and France all sound fantastic.  I'm game for any of them, but doubt I could pull off more than one with other competing commitments.  I know a good guy through the ACA, named Koen, who guides in the Pyrenees.

Slide show is a great idea.  I'm free any weekend except the 2nd and 4th weekends in March.

good to have the communication lines open again,
Ira
