Canyoning plan 2007

Robert Cobb Feb 19, 2007 02:49 AM

Seattle in the middle of February, not much canyoning to do yet.
Next best thing, talk about the upcoming season.
2007 looks to be a great season of canyoning in the Northwest.
With the rugged weather of this winter, there could be many canyons
in need of anchor upgrades this season.
Lots of new folks interested in exploring first descents around here
this season.
It seems that my usual canyoning partner, Joe has gotten himself a
job, and wont be able to make it to the Northwest for the 2007
season. Great news for Joe, but not great news for the Pacific
Northwest canyoning scene.
Joe's energy and motivation were key in the development of many of
the new routes, the last two seasons.
There are still many excellent looking canyons on the A list to be
descended.
I hope to add a few of these to the completed canyon list this
season.
Would also like to video more canyons here, in Canada, Hawaii, and
France.
for the www.canyoningvideos.com website.
Anyone interested in these trips, or other ideas, let me know.
Whats your thoughts for the 2007 season ?
Rob

Rob,

I've been meaning to write you for a while now, but a change in jobs and some traveling this January put emailing in general as a low priority.  Long story short, I'm back in the working grind and have been thinking a lot about canyons for this coming summer.  I would still like to meet up with you and many of the folks also into the sport in this area.  I'm also enthusiastically game for some first descents.

We might be too early for canyoneering, but with this warm spell we might be prime for scouting (and to scare ourselves with the higher water levels).  It would also be a good way to meet new people / each other.

Hope your holidays and winter season have been good to you,
Ira

if you are referring to Joe Bugden, i cannot match his video skill. we
have been playing email tag a little in regards to HI. If you can make
it here to Maui before the summer you got a coach to surf and plenty
of canyons to run a muck in. i will be heading to the mainland for the
new job title of self-unemployed. so i will be running canyons and
will be in your neck of the woods.

1st descends are fun and sending them weekly. most here are long,
headlamp in and out, doing them all in a push. this may mean that they
take more than a day though. i should be able to hold my own and would
luv to meet up in 2007!

you can track me down in the ACA forums.

take care

I would be a willing Sherpa on any trips. I have done a fair amount of
canyoneering here in Utah (I live in SLC), but don't have much swift
water experience. I'll be taking the ACA's swift water class this
summer and would be willing to travel up there on weekends to do
canyons. I work 3, 12 hour shifts a week and can usually shift my
schedule around to give myself really long weekends (my regular
schedule this summer should give me 6 day weekends, I can do up to 8
day weekends without using vacation time). Keep my email address handy
(ericgodfrey AT gmail DOT com) and let me know if you ever need another
body to help carry gear.

Eric.

How could this have happened? Didn't anyone try to intervene?
I have lots of experience with jobs and I would have strongly
advised him against such a decision. hehe. Good on ya joe, sorry
to hear you won't be up our way this season.

Rob, hope to do some more canyons with you this season, as well
as others from this group...

Yep, it had to happen sooner or latter.
On the positive side the new job is pretty cool...
How's this- On my second day the blokes I'm working with decide to
make the 'new guy' (me) do the aid climb up the a bolt ladder of a
100ft spire... oh and did I mention this spire is attached to the roof
of a 200m (730ft) building? (See picture - http://tinyurl.com/2dk4t4 )
YIKES! Now that was kind of scary!!
Also got to abseil down the side of that same building checking the
safety systems (cables and bolts) on the unaccessable balconies.

Money is good and there is the promise of time off mid-year... so I
amy be able to make it to my favourite canyoning location (the PNW of
course) for a week or two... fingers crossed it will all work out.
cheers

I am planning to teach another course in Seattle this summer, July 20-
22. As before I plan to stick around the following week to do canyons.
See if you can get your two weeks around that time.

Lots of great feedback from this thread.
I am going to try and make it to Hawaii for some of those fantastic
looking canyons with Eric W.
Hope to return the favor with a tour of the Northwest's finest.
Looking forward to more canyons with Craig, who I met at last years
northwest ACA canyoning course.
Charly teaches the course here in the Northwest and it is a great
way to learn basic skills in a beautiful and fun class C canyon.
Looks as though Joe might be able to sneek away from the new job for
a week or two of fun. I bet I could guess which undecended canyons
he's been thinking about since he left here last year.
Don't worry, there still there, still undecended, mabye a bit deeper
after the winter of storms we've had.
Eric G has offered new route porter service, thanks Eric, looking
forward to meeting you.
