I'm new to the pacific northwest and am just meeting this group this summer.  Personally, I love to see the international connections being made and am excited about the potential to also host and reciprocate in the way Rob and crew have done with Joe Bugden over the last few summers (Joe, I wish I could have met you while you were here, maybe next season if you're heading up.)

 

I got into canyoneering in southern california and spent my last two years doing most canyons on Chris Brennen's webpage (many with Chris himself).  The season in Southern California is nearly year round.  In fact, it gets fun when there is significant runoff or has been a lot of rain.  June would be perfect.  Bring your technu for the poison oak.  If you happen to land in southern california, let me know and I'll put you in touch with some great canyoneers you'd have a fun time with.

Recommended adventures on my short list:

in the San Gabriels: Lower Eaton, Little Santa Anita, Vasquez Creek, San Antonio Falls (short day), Great Falls of the Fox (wicked approach, but worth it)

in Death Valley: Hades

in Red Rocks near Vegas: Ice Box and Ice Cube (haven't done but have heard too many good things about)

in the Sierras near Tahoe: Lower Jump Trip (haven't done either, but also heard too many good things about - may be called something else)

in Zion: Imlay, Heaps (however, I've only gone to Zion in Sept/Oct)

 

Some of the local canyoneers here in the PNW could probably tell you more about canyons with small watersheds that might be good in June.  And some of the folks who have done more in Utah could probably speak to early summer canyoneering there.

Just like the PNW, there are INCREDIBLE opportunities for canyoning in NZ.  From reading all your group posts, it seems that Canyoning is in its infancy in the north-west, just like in NZ. Just like to post here to show my support from fellow Canyoners in a similar situation.

I'm really enjoying making acquaintances with the big names of Canyoning (or at least the most prolific and keen) and learning more about the sport (especially the rope work)

In March (or potentially Late May) i'm coming over to the US to Alabama. Not much canyoning over there, but there is a possibility to take some leave without pay and spend a couple or 3 weeks canyoning in UT, CA or OR/WA on the way home.  Does anyone have any comment as to wether the season would work for an early June trip? Is anyone interested in going for a canyon or two if I can get the dates changed and the time off?

I'm spending my new years in Sydney with Joe Budgen (hopefully) and his accomplices in OzCanyons. A first time for international travel to visit people i've never met before....

I appreciate your enthusiasm.  A couple of the canyons you haven't done, but mention, have real access issues, like trespassing, etc.  Just my two cents but I don't broadband those to the whole world.  Besides, beta on stuff like Lower jump is not easy to get.  You are fortunate to know Chris.  A bucket of enthusiasm always tastes better with a spoonful of discretion. :-)

 

This is not a reprimand, I just wanted to share my perspective.

Nothing like the internet to broadcast to the world!  However, I always try to keep conscious of this and know I'm far from the side that Randi Poer and Eshed like to rant on.

 

I do feel fortunate to have met Chris.  I've learned a lot from him and it was a very lucky way to get into the sport.

 

We haven't had an opportunity to meet yet, but from some SoCal comments I'd heard (perhaps from Sonny Lawrence) I believe we have a age difference.  I'm almost 30, you've got me by a few more years of adventure.  I appreciate the connection with an older crowd that canyoneering has provided and the guidance is constructive.

 

I've been meaning to ask where you moved to in Colorado?  I went to school in Boulder and from there moved to Palmdale for work, which was a stark difference.
