Edith Creek, 5600' ~30 degrees F

Ken and I gave each other unsure looks as we walked up the snowy
trail from the Ranier visitor center toward Edith Creek.

At the top of Myrtle Falls (100') the water in the slow-moving pools
had a thin layer of ice. 4raps and about 2 hours later, Ken and I
learned the best footing was in the flowing water even though our
feet were chilly, just to avoid the ice formed on all other nearby
surfaces. We also learned that when we paused too long on rappel,
the wet rope would briefly freeze to our piranas.

During the descent, it both snowed and hailed, but not very much.

It was a great chance to try cold water canyoneering. We both wore
wetsuits (4mm and 5mm), rain gear, and neoprene socks and gloves.
If the canyon had had any swims, I think we might have been in
trouble temperature-wise, but as it was we were actually quite
toasty with the exception of cool hands and feet.

By the time we walked back up to remove the top anchor we were warm,
but those calm pools were slushy with soon-to-form thick ice. Ken's
knife was frozen shut, as were the zippers of our backpacks. I was
able to untie the webbing at the first drop.

Great trip!! But I do think the canyon season is over at higher
elevations.

I'll put some pictures up next. Ken, I have a CD in the mail to you
for uploading to the website.

Ira

ps. There was another party that has descended Edith since Ken did
it first a few years ago. Has anyone used 8mm white or tan rope for
anchor-webbing with single aluminum rap rings?
