Access to Silver Creek?

The forest service website says that road 63 is closed due to a washout
6 miles NE Index and that you can reach rd 63 via road 63, but only
drive a few miles W until a gate stops you near the San Juan
campground. Sounds like this means an extra 4-5 miles of road before
you can do the canyon. Are there any work arounds? Has anyone done
Silver Creek this year?
Thanks.
Dan

Seems like I've heard there's a way in from the north on logging roads? Much longer drive but you park right at the trailhead as in the past. Anybody familiar with this route? A good map should show details.

Dan -

Haven't done Silver this year, but was thinking about making a trip soon.

I contacted one of the property owner's on Silver Creek and here is the info he provided this weekend:

"If you do not have a gate key for the silver creek side of Jack's Pass, you will, well, find a gate blocking your road travel at about 19 miles from the Turnoff on Hiway 2. It's another approximately 4 miles to the Galena bridge (the bridge crossing you're referring to). It's best to try to find someone with a key if you go this way, that way you can drive all the way to the trail head. Even that 1.5 miles of Spur Road is manageable with medium 4X4 clearance. Other than the gate, the road leading up to the bridge is perfect (all washouts have been cleared).

The other option you have is to of course take the Index-Galena road from the Index side. The upside is that the hike from the washout (impassible) to the turn off of FS 6330 is only about 2.5 miles, but it's just a lot tougher... since the road is washed out, all there is, is a trail through the woods for about 3/4 mile, then the rest is road walk."

Cheers,
Steve
