Portland Oregon area canyons

Doug French Jun 06, 2008 04:28 PM

Hello, I am new to this group.  I have been canyoneering in Utah and Arizona for several years now.  I will be in the Portland, Oregon area the week of June 16 and was wondering if there are any places to hike that are off the beaten track and requiring some technical skills to navigate.  I am really looking for some moderate half to full day stuff with a little water .   Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  D. Doug,

Big snowpack this year.
Looks like the canyons in the PNW might take a little longer to get in
shape.
The Columbia river gorge is close to Portland with a bunch of cool
stuff to see.
Eagle creek is a popular hiking trail that has excellent views of a
great canyon.
If water levels are good Eagle creek is a 6 to 8 hour day of fantastic
canyoning.

Thanks for the response. That is good to know about the snowpack. I
will also be in the Bend area in few days. What about Henline creek aka
Maynard Drawson's Family falls? Would it be a good Hike/canyoneering
trip this time of year? It sounds fairly tame but it looks like a
beautiful place.

Doug,
I dont know much about Henline creek, Ken has some info on his site.
If he dosen't chime in with something here, you might send him an e-
mail and ask what he knows.
