Canyon season

Robert Cobb Nov 01, 2006 02:03 PM

Thinking about all the great canyons this season, and great adventures
within those canyons.
Really was an awesome season.
A few new canyons, a few projects completed, a few more projects found.
One day in particular that my daydreams constantly return to.
Was the day that Chris Hood showed us his little project, "High Falls".
Here is the video from the day of looking.

Thanks for the sleepless nights Chris.

So, thats the canyoning day I think about when I'm at work.
Who's next ??

Not very high is it...

I would have to say my trip to the Northwest this summer was the
highlight of the year. It was great to see a new group of folks
exploring the area. Thanks to Tom, Hank, Neil and crew for a very
memorable trip.

Dito.  Since moving to Colorado my schedule has gotten a little busier.  Canyons are further and time is currently more full.  However, the week up in the Northwest was A+ grade .... I'm certainly going back!

PS - The upside is that I built a hot waxing bench in my basement for my skis .... something I haven't had to think about much while living the last 5 years in the desert. :-)  It's ski season!

I've had some unforgetable canyon fun this year.  All without mishap!  But the good stories come from the exciting moments.  I'll never forget Widowmaker in Death Valley.  We did what we believe was the first descent last Thanksgiving (there was a previous picture from the top, but going back to remove the anchor wouldn't have been worth the effort and there wasn't any evidence it had been rappelled before.)

I returned to take four friends down it in February before moving up here.  It is a 580' straight rappel.  we used a 620' spool of Bluewater Canyon 9.2.  Check out the attached picture (if it works to transmit it through the yahoo group email).  As a team we successfully found an alternate way down to avoid the cut 250' off the deck.

-Ira
(btw, we pull tested the damaged section and the remaining core broke at the advertised tensile strength for the rope.  Go bluewater!)

Ira,

I knew a guy named Bob Greer (sp?) that was looking at that widow maker rap a number of years ago.  In fact, I think they went out and did it. (not sure about that though)  Bob used to live in Las Vegas and I was curious if you where part of that crew.  Bob seemed to like doing these big stunt rappells.

Neil,

Thanks for keeping me honest: I should have said, at the time we did what we thought was the first descent.  Scott Smith did get in touch with Bob Greer after we got home.  Bob claimed the first descent in '02?and said he named it Widowmaker.  Thinking back on it, it's hard to separate all the thoughts that go through your head when you do a first descent or think you're doing a first descent.  That's definitely an exciting part of canyoneering in the PNW: so many untouched canyons... you're right Rob, they do keep you thinking about them again and again because you don't know if it can be done and when you figure it out -- the scouting beforehand or the right anchor placements to dodge the flow -- it's a great feeling of accomplishment.

Ok, someone else's turn for their most memorable canyon completed or not this year.

ps. is anyone thinking about the ACA rendezvous in Greece next April.  Rich put it out there like it's for sure going to happen.

Yup, an excellent season.
Like Chris, my strongest memory is of that chamber in the S.Fork
Artlish River. If you can sort out a way to get to the top of it,
I'm in... I think that'd be worth my purchasing another plane ticket
right there.
Huge Thanks to everyone I met and canyon'd with, youse guys are
always welcome down under so I can repay you with some of my local
canyons.... Also, an especially big cheers to Rob for putting up
with me for four months and giving me a place to stay for three of
those.
Hope to see y'all again in a canyon somewhere, sometime.
cheers,
Joe

2006 was my inagural canyoneering season. I started off by quitting my job
in May. Soon after my dog and I split for Utah. We did a four day backpack
in the Escalante backcountry (moody canyons). This wasn't a
technical trip but it was outstanding nonetheless. I think I love that
area as much as Everett Ruess did.

Shortly after I rolled in to Cedar City and took the 3 day technical
canyoneering course taught by Rich. It was scorching hot, the canyons were
dry, but the class itself was excellent and just what I was hoping for. I
left the class with the skill set and confidence needed to tackle canyons
on my own. I have a bone to pick with the ACA based on promises made but
not fulfilled, but I'll save that for another day.

Only a week later I was up in Index, taking the ACA course again with
Charly, Rob, Joe and two other students. Another excellent class in a
completely different setting. The highlight being the descent of Silver
Creek. Not a canyon packed with spectacular rapells, but an immensely fun
canyon. Lots of jumps, slides, floating, and about the best possible place
you would have wanted to be on this hot summer day.

Beyond that, I did some scouting around in my neighborhood of the NE
Olympic Peninsula. While traipsing down an abandoned logging roud, I came
across One and A Half Mile Creek and a cool series of waterfalls and
pools. That was one of the highlights of my summer. I kind of felt like I
was finishing up the job that Lewis & Clark started, heh. I was able to
descend that canyon a day or two later.

Thornton and Gorge creeks with Rob, Joe, Chris were certainly worthy
adventures and made for some great photography. The last canyon I did was
Murhut creek with my friend Rick (his first canyon).

Eventually I needed to go back to work. This was a depressing, and I
started consuming large amounts of top pot donuts (dang those are good).
We had some really beautiful weather during this time so it was tough
being inside an office building.

Enough of 06' though. I'm really looking forward to getting out and
exploring for new canyons in the NW, descending the established ones I
haven't hit yet, and getting up to Canada and back to Utah. As for grander
schemes I have a soft spot for Brasil, and would really like to get a trip
in to the Chapada Da Diamantina.

couple pics from those parts:
