Kiwi Visitor
Theres a pretty good chance that I might find myself in the PNW in August this year. Might be inviting myself to canyon with Joe Bugden when he comes through from the 15th to 30th or so, but was wondering who might be interested/availabl
Also may be short of a canyon partner on the weekend of 23-24 August.
Not sure exactly where I might end up, but am interested in spending some time in BC/Vancouver as well as Washington.
I'd have all my own personal canyon gear (minus a rope) and some camping gear. I've canyoned twice in both the Blue Mountains, Australia and Zion/Roost in Utah. Done several first descents here in New Zealand and a couple of canyons in Switzerland. I have a solid base of skills from hiking and climbing in several different countries.
If anyone is potentially interested to share either a canyon, the cost of gas or a square of thier living room/backyard for me to camp on, (or combinations of the above) then I'd be keen to hear from you..
Cheers,
Chucky

A possible option for an early season canyon is Dog
Creek which is on the washington side of the Columbia
River Gorge. It has a small drainage area and is at a
low elevation. The beta is at
www.canyoneeringnor
section. The description is from the bottom going
up. It is probably better to reverse that and go top
to bottom so you can stay in the creek bed and avoid
bypasses around interesting areas.

Chucky,
Canyoning in the PNW this year looks like its going to be exciting.
Mountains got tons of snow last winter.
I drove past one of the popular canyon routes yesterday and there was
fresh snow all around. Should be a season of some big water fun.
A few of us get together each year for a week of canyoning in August.
You are invited to join us for that. Depending on work, I should be
able to get out for work on a few ongoing projects before or after
that week. Ira and I are working on plans for an Australia canyoning
trip this winter. What are the logistics of doing a few canyons in New
Zealand during the trip ?

Hey Rob,
I'm really looking forward to some great canyons. Though I am just as
excited to go canyoning with a bunch of experienced lads. Experienced
Canyon buddies in NZ (especially near me) are extremely rare.
We can yarn about NZ canyoning much more when we meet up, but
following should give you something to think about..
Snowpack and waterlevel season considerations will likely be very
similar to the PNW. I say 'likely' because I haven't done much in the
South Island, which has the big mountains, big snowfalls and the
higher quality canyons.
The best month to avoid the holiday crowds, get reasonably low flows,
get stable weather and warm (ish) temperatures would be February.
However, if you decide to come over the Christmas break I'd be keen
and able to host you for a couple of weeks.
The Canyoning scene in NZ is VERY quiet. There about 100 or so people
in the Kiwi Canyons group, but only a few are actively canyoning in
NZ. However, there are enough people in select areas to keep you busy
for 3-4 weeks if you wanted ;) Plenty of canyons, but they require a
bit of finding sometimes...
We have short volcanic semi open canyons near Auckland, with lots of
little-med jumps. http://tinyurl.
Several significant water canyons through volcanic rock of the Central
Volcanic Plateau of the North Island (ie south of Taupo).
http://tinyurl.
Also some limestone slots west of the volcanic plateau.
http://tinyurl.
Lots of Ignimbrite potential around Rotorua. Very similar character to
Aussie Blue mountain Canyons, but with incredible water..
check out Ataahua Canyon http://tinyurl.
There are plenty of steep mountain streams with lots of waterfalls and
not much canyon in the Tararua ranges north of wellington. Lots of
walking to get to these Greywacke trips, but they are remote and
interesting.
In the top of the south island are several Karst Limestone Slots not
far from Nelson.
The west coast will have a bunch of ultra munchy, super high water
mega death traps...
Arthurs Pass has several mountain canyons, again in the chossy greywacke.
Haast Pass would probably be the best spot to go for some high volume
slots through schist. There's a couple of guys down there who've done
a dozen or so descents through some great canyons off the main highway
through the Pass.
Check out a canyon near Mt Sommers, East of the Alps near
Christchurch. Volcanic Rhyolite (only small amounts of volcanic rock
in the South Island) http://tinyurl.
I have several 'Projects' around Queenstown.. How about a helicopter
to Lake Unknown for an expedition style first descent of this fall...
(Bring your automatic bolt gun..) http://tinyurl.
Wanaka has some incredible mountain slots, but most are private guided
access.. however, if you turn up to the shop and sound experienced and
sensible, you can get some beta... http://www.deepcany
Then if you are really into exploring, you can have your big wall
death canyons in Fiordland. Take the Norway Fiords then add 45' of
precipitation annually.... What about Sutherland Falls or Brown Falls
(850m, 2500')?? http://tinyurl.
I'm moving to Christchurch in September, so If you wanted to fly there
around Christmas, I could host you for a NZ Canyon tour for up to
two weeks.
I'm sure we'll yarn more in the states !!

Henline Creek, Lost Creek, and Sardine Creek are all
worthwhile. Water levels in Oregon are well above
average for this time of year. If you are in Bend a
dry alternative is "Crack in the Ground" a slot up to
two miles long. It is eight miles north of Christmas
valley on good roads. Fort Rock is near by.

Thank you for the info. I think I will start with Henline and work my
way up from there.

My oldest son is a pilot. If any one is interested in
seeing some canyons or mountains from the air, let me
know. Recently we have flown around Mount Saint Helens
and Mount Rainier and Mount constance in the Olympics.
We saw some nice looking canyons too.
He is happy to take people up. He appreciates it if
people help with the fuel cost, but that is not
essential.
